Ultra Marathon Man (November 13th)
Actually, to be perfectly honest, this blog is a day late. I am writing this on Friday the 14th of November.
I read a book recently about an American man (actually from California)named Dean Karnazes. He is famous mostly for being an "Ultra Marathon Man". What is this you may ask? Well, we've all heard of marathons. They are about 42 kilometers long and take a few hours to complete, depending on the condition of the runner. Well, an ultra-marathon is a much longer than a regular marathon. These races can vary in distance, but some of them are around 160 kilometers. They take about 24 hours to complete. These types of runs are for the super-elite runner. For these people a regular marathon is just a warm-up. People who join in these ultra-marathons are extremely well-conditioned and you can't even do the race until you quality for it, which the average person couldn't (most likely) do. Why would anyone want to run for such a long distance; 100k and further? Who knows, they may not even know. But there are people out there doing it every year. Does this sound appealing to you? Probably not, but if it does, go for it! Throughout my whole life, off and on since I was 17 years old, I have been running. Not really because I wanted to, but because I had to because of my job. Physical Training is very important to most branches of the miliary. Especially the Marines. I have never really run except when I was told to, or a couple of times when I decided to get back into shape. I have never been able to stick with it for very long. One reason for this is because when you haven't run for a long time and you become heavier, from fat, your body changes and it's harder for joints, bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, feet, and even your brain, to get back into the rhythm of running. About two weeks ago, I decided to give running a serious chance. More serious than ever before. I decided that I am just not losing the fat quickly enough just by lifting weights. It is making a difference, but not necessarily with fat-loss. So I started running (jogging) and walking together pretty much every morning. I go for a short 45 minute run/walk 3 to 4 days during the week, and then a longer run/walk on the weekend with on rest day to follow. For the first time ever, I haven't had to stop training due to injury or strain on my body. It's only been about two weeks but it has been consistent and regular. So, while reading this Ultra Marathon Man book by Dean Karnazes, I was inspired and extremely motivated to go out and run longer and further than I ever have in my life. I woke up this morning at 0600 as usual and got ready for my usual 45 minute weekday run. But after about 10 minutes I decided that it just wasn't enough for me today. I needed to push myself. I immediately turned around and stopped at my apartment and got my id card and some cash, and headed out for a "long" run. I wasn't sure how far I would make it, but I was hoping that I could make it to my friend's house in Kawaba. From my apt. to his place in just over 18k one way. I was hoping that he could give me a ride home at some point after I got there, if I made it that far. Until today, the furthest I had ever run was about 10k. I was weary about running 18k after only 2 weeks of run-training. After 2 hours and 15 minutes I arrived at his house. I was exhausted. The last 3-4 kilometers was all uphill, and I was running out of energy. I hadn't eaten anything since 10:30 last night. I only drank a glass of water before starting my journey this morning. I was proud that I made it to my goal. 18.4k. The longest I had ever run! After about 20-30 minutes of resting at his house, and sipping on cold water, I decided that I would like to try running back home now. My friend was stunned. He had fully intended on driving me home, and couldn't believe his ears when I said that. So, I set out for Numata. I snacked on energy bars and Aquarius while run/walking back home. I took 2 hours and 28 minutes to get home. And while it wasn't technically non-stop, I ran a total of 37k today in 4 hours and 45 minutes. Will I ever be an ultra-marathon man like Dean Karnazes??? I don't know. Maybe if my body allows it. But for now, I'm just going to do what I can to condition my body the best I can. Ron ile reading this book, I began to feel
