Fist solo overnight hiking trip
Today I returned from a great weekend of hiking in Gunma/ Niigata.
I ventured out yesterday morning on my fist solo overnight hike. The trip went without any problems. I made it back alive and without injury. Always a good way to return. I started my hike in Minakami at the Doai Bridge. I took the ropeway up from the bottom of TanigawaDake to Tenjin Daira. From there it was about a 2 hour hike to the peak of Tanigawa. I continued on hiking down the back side of the mountain and then up IchinokuraDake. After that, I hiked up ShigekuraDake. At the far side of that peak there is a large Hinangoya (storm shelter). I arrived there at around 1:30pm, making the total hike only about 4 hours from the ropeway. I had been pondering whether or not to stay overnight during the hike. I had everything I would need to stay overnight, including; a tent, sleeping bag, clothes, food, stove, fuel, etc. Once at the hut, I decided to stay. I was the first overnighter to arrive at the hut, but soon other hikers starting showing up. Before long, there were 8 of us that would be staying there overnight. I set up my camp in one section of the shelter and got comfortable. With about 4-5 hours of daylight left, certain things needed to be done. Plenty of time. The first thing I did was drink as much water as I could. I had brought 3.5 liters with me, and I still had 2 liters left over. I drank that pretty quickly. Hiking can make you thirsty! After re-hydrating, I cooked my dinner. I bit early, but I was pretty hungry. Hiking can also make you hungry! I boiled some water and added some instant pasta noodles. When they were soft, I added some soup mix for flavor, and crackers for thickness. Also, some pepper for a little kick! Overall, a pretty good dinner. After dinner, I headed down to the water source. It was relatively close; only about 1 minute each way from the hut. The fresh, natural water on the mountain is delicious. I wish I could drink it everyday! ALthough it did take about 20 minutes to fill my 3.5 liters up again. Just a slow drip coming out ot the mountain. But well worth it! Among the 8 hikers in the hut was; me, another guy, 28 years old, scientist from Niigata; an older man from Isesaki, who was full of hiking stories and brought enough sake to get pretty lively and keep us all entertained. He said he has hiked 77 of Gunma's top 100 mountains this year alone; another couple of middle aged men who weren't all that talkative; and an older couple, maybe around 60 years. A pretty good crowd. We were lucky that no one else came though. That hut fits 8 people comfortably. Any more than that and it would have been cramped in there! Once the sun went down, it was time for bed. I guess I went to sleep at about 7pm that night. A good night's sleep except for the fact that I forgot to bring my sleeping pad. I ended up lying directly on the hard wood of the floor. I won't forget that pad again, trust me! And a symphony of snoring by everyone in the hut. Nice... Everyone seemed to wake up around the same time; 4:30am. I got up, got ready to move, and was hiking back at 5:30. The sun never came out. It was foggy, and moist all morning. The views from up there are spectacular, if you go on a day where the sky is clear. If not, you can't see anything. This particular morning I could only see about 10meters in front of me. I climbed back down ShigekuraDake, IchinokuraDake, and up and back down TanigawaDake back to the ropeway. The hike back took only 3 hours. I met a lot of people coming up, but no one going back down. The people going up looked to be just going to Tanigawa for a short time and then heading back down shortly after. This is what the majority of people seem to do. Only a small percentage actually plan to stay overnight, and those who do, usually stay at the pay-hut on Tanigawa, not the storm shelters in various areas in the mountains. It's very easy to get up TanigawaDake and back down in a day, but for me, part of the fun is the overnight stay on the mountain. Waking up early the next day and seeing the day begin. It does help if the weather is nice and the sky is clear, but that's not always the case. Even so, it's still nice. Ron Anyway, I was home by 10:30 this morning.
