Building self-confidence.
Oh? English?! Who is this?! Wait! It must be NJT!! Yes, that's right~ NJT here to entertain you again (^_^;). Now on to my day....
Thursday is the day I teach little ones without the help of another teacher (normally I team teach). The cool thing about this though, is the students really don't need another Japanese teacher there. Since I've been in charge of this class alone I haven't had any problems getting the students to understand what we are going to do, or what I was trying to say. This is mostly due to the fact that some of the students have been attending Stellar since they were 3 years old (they are now 6). I have been watching them this entire time and so they've become used to how I go about things as well as understanding what each thing means. Some of the students haven't been attending for so long, but the ones that have try their hardest to help the other students understand if they look confused. However, today when the students would normally help out another student that didn't understand, they didn't do it. So it was me and the relatively new student. Now, student H is the typical student that looses concentration REALLY quick, so wasn't paying attention when the other students were doing the activity. When it came to be her turn, she didn't know what to do. I first tried explaining what we were doing, that didn't work so I gave examples, that didn't work either. The student started getting frustrated so I decided to skip her and let her pay attention. I kept an eye on her while I did the activity with the other students. A student came back to class (The student was in the restroom when the activity started) and so was watching others to know what we were doing. He was suddenly called on by another student and answered incorrectly and student H just happened to be the person he sat next to, she then explained how he was supposed to answer and he was able to. Finally, at the end student H was called again and answered correctly with both self-confidence and to the delight of her fellow classmates too. It might seem like a small thing, but I believe this student learned the importance of paying attention and that they can figure out things on their own if they just open their ears (at least I hope... hehe). I too learned that it's important to trust the student and to just let them learn from their surroundings instead of trying to teach them directly. As much as we teachers try to teach students, sometimes they are just more capable of learning from each other (and a lot more willing too) so we should give them the chance to learn that way instead of keeping the lesson a limited to only the teacher teaching the students. There you go~ hopefully my little day today was of some use to you. See you next post! -njt
